This unique handbook contains the expertise from more than 60 research groups, covering the entire range of topics in protein folding - from biophysics to molecular medicine. The first part explains the principles and factors governing protein stability, and how this knowledge may be used to predict folding pathways. It also surveys important techniques used to study the protein folding process, including spectroscopic, chemical and biological techniques. The second part is devoted to protein folding, unfolding, and misfolding in the cellular context, introducing chaperones and other enzymes involved in protein folding, as well as a study of the pathophysiology of misfolded proteins in amyloid and other disease states. The whole is rounded off by a discussion of the possibility of interfering with the protein folding process by genetic engineering. The comprehensiveness and outstanding quality of the carefully selected contents make this the ultimate reference for every scientist with an interest in protein folding.

Editorial Reviews
Review"... the techniques are presented in minute details and in a "cookbook-standardized manner"... The personal notes inserted by each contributor provide assurance that the techniques would work in any laboratory... Having all of those protocols updated and tested in practice and bound in one volume will be attractive to many scientists who deal with molecular biology techniques."- Modern Pathology"There were over 190 authors involved in writing the protocols, ...each protocol is presented in outline format an follows a common numbering scheme, making it easy to find relevant sections....Many of the protocols include tables of data or figures, including drawings or photographs of gels...One of the most useful sections in each protocol lists notes, which elucidate possible pitfalls, provide troubleshooting tips, or give alternate methods or explanations for steps. This very practical information makes successful duplication of the procedure much more likely than when attempting to follow the often less detailed or less flexible descriptions given in journal articles....this handbook would be extremely useful as a reference in most university libraries."-E-Streams"...it covers practically all of the very important and large field of nucleic acid research. The volume summarizes, in 10 parts, recent advances in the isolation , analysis and manipulation of nucleic acids. ...The chapters were contributed by authors from leading laboratories in the field all over the world....The book provides the reader with a large set of ready-to use protocols needed to undertake complex molecular biology experimental project on a large spectrum of biological models involving isolation and analysis of nucleic acids. It is thus an almost indispensable handbook for anybody working in the field of molecular biology and genetics."-Folia Microbiologica"...extremely useful as a reference in most university libraries." - E-Streams"...comprehensive and detailed...this is an set of recipes for the genetic kitchen." -The Biologist Product DescriptionA comprehensive treasury of all the key molecular biology methods-ranging from DNA extraction to gene localization in situ-needed to function effectively in the modern laboratory. Each of the 120 highly successful techniques follows the format of the much acclaimed Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, providing an introduction to the scientific basis of each technique, a complete listing of all the necessary materials and reagents, and clear step-by-step instruction to permit error-free execution. Included for each technique are notes about pitfalls to avoid, troubleshooting tips, alternate methods, and explanations of the reasons for certain steps-all key elements contributing significantly to success or failure in the lab. The Nucleic Acid Protocols Handbook constitutes today's most comprehensive collection of all the key classic and cutting-edge techniques for the successful isolation, analysis, and manipulation of nucleic acids by both experienced researchers and those new to the field.

Review "... is unique among the related publications. It is a wonderful guide to successful experimentation in the field of RNA research." Engineering in Life Sciences "...a true handbook that should not be missed in any laboratory engaged in RNA research. The text is concisely written, full of good ideas and the "troubleshooting" chapters will help to find ways out of deadlocks. I congratulate the authors to this handbook and recommend it to all RNA enthusiasts." Angewandte Chemie - IE "The book is helpful for molecular biologists, biochemists and biotechnologists and of interest to every researcher experimenting with RNA." NewDrugs "... these two volumes provide an in-depth introduction to methods for RNA analysis at all levels ..." Biomedical Chromatography Book Description This all-in-one compendium of current laboratory techniques for the study of RNA brings together numerous novel methods that were hitherto only available through the primary literature. The editors - themselves experienced RNA researchers - have gathered expert authors from the US and Europe for the ultimate in everyday working knowledge. In more than 300 detailed protocols, all the techniques covered are treated with the user in mind, including practical advice and an invaluable "troubleshooting" section. The broad scope of the book allows the side-by-side treatment of specialized methods with basic biochemical techniques for the isolation, characterization and functional analysis of RNA. All pertinent laboratory methods are presented in detail, including
+ RNA synthesis, modification and ligation
+ Sequence and structure determination of RNA
+ Isolation and purification of ribonucleoproteins
+ RNA crystallization + Single molecule studies on RNA
+ Analysis of splice variants + RNA imaging in vivo

Now an established handbook of principles and techniques, this text develops an understanding of the relevance of four fundamental properties of the analyte: shape, polarity, charge and size, to the three key types of analysis: separation, identification and quantification. The third edition of Analytical Biochemistry has now been fully updated in content and format, making it even more accessible to students learning how to select analytical techniques and recognise their scope and limitations.

Principles of Biochemistry by A. L. Lehninger, D. L. Nelson, M. M. Cox Worth, 4th 2004
4th edition of Albert Lehninger's 'Principles of Biochemistry' has been rewritten by David Nelson and Michael Cox is an expansion on the classical biochemistry text, i.e. metabolic biochemistry, to include both structures of macromolecules and molecular biology. Now updated with the human genome project and up to date information on the two newest branches in biology - proteomics and genomics. The scope of topics now included in biochemistry textbooks, particularly for biology majors, goes beyond metabolic biochemistry, and biochemistry becomes a general topic 'molecular biology'. The use of the word molecular simply refers to the study of biology at the molecular level, although the term molecular biology refers to molecular genetics in particular. The revolutionary advances in genetics - recombinant technology, sequencing, expression, cloning - leave behind the classical divisions into biochemistry and molecular biology. Both topics are normally included in biochemistry textbooks, while molecular biology textbooks, or cell biology textbooks, usually do not include metabolism. The inclusion of genetics and physiology topics in biochemistry textbooks comes at the expense of biochemistry of 'exotic' organisms like plants and microbes (except photosynthesis). It also comes at the expense of central themes of biochemistry such as thermodynamics and enzyme kinetics. They are more and more relegated to the graduate level at colleges, or left to chemistry department's biochemistry courses. Looking at this new Lehninger book is like looking at the major shifts occurring in modern biology. The reader may get a sense that within the next decade, a new branch of biology will have established itself, leaving classical biochemistry behind and developing out of what is now called functional genomics.
