Description:
This book is the eagerly awaited second edition of the best-selling Mitochondria, a book widely acknowledged as the first modern, truly comprehensive authored work on the important, scientifically fundamental topic of the cellular organelles known as mitochondria. This new edition brings readers completely up to date on the many significant findings that have occurred in the eight years since the book was first published. As in that seminal first edition, the second edition tackles the biochemistry, genetics, and pathology of mitochondria in different organisms. The new edition provides thorough updates of all literature concerning this vital organelle, its functions, ongoing research surrounding it, and its importance vis-à-vis a broad range of issues in cellular and molecular biology. The book includes detailed descriptions of current and developing technologies around mitochondrial research and discovery, and highlights subjects that are growing, such as the use of proteomics.

Editorial Reviews
Review"This book is written by experienced authors who understand the practical needs of bench scientists. All laboratory personnel who perform cell culture on a regular basis will benefit from it. The authors provide summaries, keywords, helpful introductions, lists of necessary materials and equipment, and detailed protocols for culturing a wide-variety of cell types. The chapters on manipulating pluripotent stem cells will be of great value to researchers interested in regenerative medicine and cell engineering. This book is an important and valuable contribution to the field of cell biology and the art of manipulating cells in culture."-Doody's Health Sciences Book Review JournalFrom Reviews of the Second Edition. . ."...a highly prized collection that no cell culture laboratory should be without, so much so that it is likely to be 'borrowed' and never returned!"-Retinoids & Lipid Soluble Vitamins in Clinical Practice"...any laboratory involved in cell culture will find this book of use..."-Microbiology Today"...would be most useful to have in the laboratory itself...and a valuable reference resource in a library." Four Stars -Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Journal"...an excellent starting point for those who are interested in learning the basics of cell culture and the types of manipulations that make them useful."-Journal of Chemical NeuroanatomyProduct DescriptionIn this fully revised edition of an established classic, expert researchers and clinicians describe in step-by-step detail updated techniques for the isolation and growth of major primary cell types, such as kidney proximal tubule cells, hepatocytes, keratinocytes, and cardiomyocytes. The authors offer readily reproducible new methods for the differentiation of embryonic stem (ES) cells into various hematopoietic cell types, for fetal thymic organ culture, and for the isolation and culture of specialized cell types, such as mammary progenitor cells, skeletal muscle myofibers, mesenchymal cells, neural stem cells, hematopoietic cells, stromal cell lines, and endothelial cells. Additional chapters describe new techniques (leukocyte rolling, isolation of side-population cells, and scalable production of ES-derived cells) and detail quality control methods for cell lines (detection and elimination of mycoplasma, DNA fingerprinting, and cytogenetic analysis).

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The long-awaited new edition of James D. Watson's classic text, Molecular Biology of the Gene, has been thoroughly revised and is published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick's paper on the structure of the DNA double-helix. Twenty-one concise chapters, co-authored by five highly respected molecular biologists, provide current, authoritative coverage of a fast-changing discipline, giving both historical and basic chemical context. Divided into four parts: Genetics and Chemistry, Central Dogma, Regulation, and Methods. For college instructors, students, and anyone interested in molecular biology and genetics. Book Info(Pearson Education) Textbook covers an overview of molecular biology and introduces the basic chemical concepts applicable. Discuss DNA replication, transcription, and translation. Also describes how gene expression is regulated and how changes in gene regulation account for different animals made up of the same genes. Abundant color illustrations. Previous edition: c1987.

Editorial Reviews
Many investigations into the structure and function of cells and tissues require the isolation of a particular membrane or subcellular component(organelle). This book covers all the necessary aspects, from the homogenization of cells via a variety of separation techniques, to the isolation and characterization of peroxisomes and other organelles. Basic separation techniques needed in all cell biology laboratories are given and presented in the context of a number of related topics such as the labelling of ligands, the kinetics of their internalization and analysis of data, and the electron microscopy of organelles. Subcellular Fractionation contains expert advice and detailed methodology, and will be invaluable to researchers in this important area.

Cell Biology BY Alberts,Johnson(Physiology Aspirants Exclusive Download)

Molecular Biology of the Cell,

4th Edition,

ISBN-10: 0815332181

ISBN-13: 9780815332183

Produced by the same team that brought us the classic Molecular Biology of the Cell, Essential Cell Biology is an introductory text suitable for newcomers to the biological sciences. It covers the topics expected of such a volume: basic cell structure and metabolism, proteins, DNA (and DNA technology), gene regulation, membranes and membrane transport, mitochondria and chloroplasts, compartments and transport, signaling, the cytoskeleton, cell division and the cell-cycle, and tissues and development. No biology or chemistry background is assumed — quite basic chemistry is explained, not just reaction energetics and kinematics but even atomic structure and the different kinds of chemical bonds. But this is done without fuss and without ever letting the biology slip from view. There is some treatment of laboratory methods, but only where they fit naturally into the understanding of the biology.
Essential Cell Biology has excellent diagrams (consistently labelled and coloured throughout the text), a good selection of photographs, and clear and readable explanations. It has the common apparatus of textbooks (an opening summary and a list of keywords for each chapter, and a glossary), but the outstanding pedagogical feature is the set of questions which accompany each chapter. Great effort has been taken to make these interesting and thought-provoking, and full answers to all of them (not just the numerical ones) are provided. A minor complaint is the absence of any references or further reading suggestions: simple pointers to the relevant sections of Molecular Biology of the Cell would have been easy but useful.
It is obviously intended as a university or senior high school text, but Essential Cell Biology is so well put together for self-study that I recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. It is non-repetitive, conceptually rigorous, and doesn't cut any corners, so it could happily be read by academics from other disciplines — but at the same time it is a book which could inspire a bright 12 year old. Writing for readers without any background knowledge is actually harder than writing for graduates, so I think Essential Cell Biology is actually a greater achievement than Molecular Biology of the Cell.
