Sales Rank: 1501698
ISBN / ASIN: 0792374479
EAN: 9780792374473
Binding: Hardcover
Manufacturer: Springer
Studio: Springer
Book Description:
Analytical Molecular Biology illustrates the importance of simple analytical methods applied to some basic molecular biology problems, with an emphasis on the importance of biological problems, rather than the complexity of mathematics. First, the book examines crucial experimental data for a specific problem. Mathematical models will then be constructed with explicit inclusion of biological facts. From such models, predictions can be deduced and then suggest further experimental studies. A few important molecular biology problems will be discussed in the order of the complexity of the mathematical models. Based on such illustrations, the readers can then develop their own analytical methods to study their own problems. This book is for anyone who knows they need to learn how to apply mathematical models to biology, but doesn't necessarily want to, from practicing researchers looking to acquire more analytical tools to advanced students seeking a clear, explanatory text.

Review
"The lessons here in dealing with the information explosion in biology are that an ounce of rationale is worth a pound of facts and that, for educational value, there is nothing to beat an author writing about stuff he knows from the inside." -- NatureProduct Description
In the first edition of Genetics and Molecular Biology, renowned researcher and award-winning teacher Robert Schleif produced a unique and stimulating text that was a notable departure from the standard compendia of facts and observations. Schleif's strategy was to present the underlying fundamental concepts of molecular biology with clear explanations and critical analysis of well-chosen experiments. The result was a concise and practical approach that offered students a real understanding of the subject. This second edition retains that valuable approach--with material thoroughly updated to include an integrated treatment of prokaryotic and eukaryotic molecular biology.
Genetics and Molecular Biology is copiously illustrated with two-color line art. Each chapter includes an extensive list of important references to the primary literature, as well as many innovative and thought-provoking problems on material covered in the text or on related topics. These help focus the student's attention of a variety of critical issues. Solutions are provided for half of the problems.
Praise for the first edition:
"Schleif's Genetics and Molecular Biology... is a remarkable achievement. It is an advanced text, derived from material taught largely to postgraduates, and will probably be thought best suited to budding professionals in molecular genetics. In some ways this would be a pity, because there is also gold here for the rest of us... The lessons here in dealing with the information explosion in biology are that an ounce of rationale is worth a pound of facts and that, for educational value, there is nothing to beat an author writing about stuff he knows from the inside."--Nature.
"Schleif presents a quantitative, chemically rigorous approach to analyzing problems in molecular biology. The text is unique and clearly superior to any currently available."--R.L. Bernstein, San Francisco State University.
"The greatest strength is the author's ability to challenge the student to become involved and get below

Editorial Reviews
Review"... the techniques are presented in minute details and in a "cookbook-standardized manner"... The personal notes inserted by each contributor provide assurance that the techniques would work in any laboratory... Having all of those protocols updated and tested in practice and bound in one volume will be attractive to many scientists who deal with molecular biology techniques."- Modern Pathology"There were over 190 authors involved in writing the protocols, ...each protocol is presented in outline format an follows a common numbering scheme, making it easy to find relevant sections....Many of the protocols include tables of data or figures, including drawings or photographs of gels...One of the most useful sections in each protocol lists notes, which elucidate possible pitfalls, provide troubleshooting tips, or give alternate methods or explanations for steps. This very practical information makes successful duplication of the procedure much more likely than when attempting to follow the often less detailed or less flexible descriptions given in journal articles....this handbook would be extremely useful as a reference in most university libraries."-E-Streams"...it covers practically all of the very important and large field of nucleic acid research. The volume summarizes, in 10 parts, recent advances in the isolation , analysis and manipulation of nucleic acids. ...The chapters were contributed by authors from leading laboratories in the field all over the world....The book provides the reader with a large set of ready-to use protocols needed to undertake complex molecular biology experimental project on a large spectrum of biological models involving isolation and analysis of nucleic acids. It is thus an almost indispensable handbook for anybody working in the field of molecular biology and genetics."-Folia Microbiologica"...extremely useful as a reference in most university libraries." - E-Streams"...comprehensive and detailed...this is an set of recipes for the genetic kitchen." -The Biologist Product DescriptionA comprehensive treasury of all the key molecular biology methods-ranging from DNA extraction to gene localization in situ-needed to function effectively in the modern laboratory. Each of the 120 highly successful techniques follows the format of the much acclaimed Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, providing an introduction to the scientific basis of each technique, a complete listing of all the necessary materials and reagents, and clear step-by-step instruction to permit error-free execution. Included for each technique are notes about pitfalls to avoid, troubleshooting tips, alternate methods, and explanations of the reasons for certain steps-all key elements contributing significantly to success or failure in the lab. The Nucleic Acid Protocols Handbook constitutes today's most comprehensive collection of all the key classic and cutting-edge techniques for the successful isolation, analysis, and manipulation of nucleic acids by both experienced researchers and those new to the field.

Oxford Dictionary Of Biochemistry And Molecular Biology

Physiology Aspirants Proudly Presents.........................

# 753 pages
# Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; Revised edition (February 24, 2000)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0198506732
# ISBN-13: 978-0198506737

From Booklist Just as its title suggests, this work is a dictionary of more than 17,000 terms currently in use in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology. Entries are uniformly concise, with entries for the most complex topics (such as protein) covering only about half a page. In a single alphabet, the dictionary includes topics and methods, chemical substances, and brief biographical entries of key scientists. The only illustrations are structure diagrams of the more complex chemical compounds. Appendixes help the reader understand scientific nomenclature and Greek symbols, list organizations and Web sites of interest in the field, and cover current hot topics in biochemistry. Despite its low price (especially for a science reference source), this dictionary is not for every library. Because it will require a significant scientific background to be able to understand the content of this work, it is beyond the reach of the casual reader. Libraries supporting research or college-level study in the field will find it useful, but other libraries will be able to rely on existing chemical and biological reference works to cover this material. For public libraries, the eighth edition of the McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology [RBB S 15 97] and The Merck Index (12th ed., Merck, 1996), which is an excellent source for information on chemical compounds, will fill most needs. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Review ' A volume like this in a research lab really is likely to prove its worth' Reference Reviews " ... it is very good, comprehensive, impressive (used on several occasions), and worth the money" Cell Biology International " ... a very useful expanatory dictionary for students, scientists, and university and laboratory libraries ... " Photosynthetica
